Portal overview
The Karst Firewall 5.0 portal is the public, open website of a cross-border wildfire Digital Twin for the Italy–Slovenia Karst. It is free to use and needs no account: you can watch live fire-weather risk, browse weather and air-quality data, explore an interactive 3D model of the territory and learn how the project works.
The portal is the public companion to the operational cockpit — the reserved area used by control-room operators, firekeepers and partner agencies. The cockpit is documented in the Operator guide; this track covers only the public site.
Who it is for
- Citizens & residents — understand today's wildfire risk and how the Karst is protected.
- Authorities & civil protection — a shared, cross-border picture of hazard, weather and history.
- Researchers & students — open data, methods and the science behind the Karst Fire Weather Index.
How to navigate
The top navigation groups every page into a few menus:
| Menu | What you'll find |
|---|---|
| Live Risk | The Live Risk Map, weather stations, the Karst Fire Weather Index, air quality, the e-nose early warning and wildfire history — see 02 — Live data. |
| 3D Twin | The interactive 3D model of the Karst — see 03 — Explore & simulate. |
| Simulator | The guided fire-spread simulator (sign-up gated) — see 03 — Explore & simulate. |
| The Project | About & partners, roadmap, research, prevention, Earth observation, glossary, references and open source — see 04 — The project. |
| Contact | Get in touch or subscribe to the newsletter — see 05 — Accounts & contact. |
The home page opens with a live snapshot: current fire-weather risk, a strip of live environmental readings (air quality and weather) and a feed of the latest activity. Every figure on the portal is live or sourced from the project's own data — when a value can't be loaded the page says so rather than showing a stale number.
Languages
The portal speaks Italian, Slovenian, English and German. Use the
language switcher (the two-letter code, e.g. EN ▾) in the top bar. Your
choice is remembered and keeps you on the same page. Technical terms across
the prose carry a hover/tap definition drawn from the
glossary.
Dark mode
A moon/sun button in the top bar toggles a dark theme for comfortable reading at night; your preference is remembered on the device. The portal also follows your system's dark-mode setting the first time you visit.
Privacy
The portal counts page visits in an anonymised, GDPR-compliant way — no personal data, no cross-site tracking. See 05 — Accounts, access & contact for details.
