The Karst, watched
before it burns.

Karst FireWall 5.0 is a free natural-hazard monitoring tool for the local communities of the cross-border Karst. It brings together artificial intelligence, satellites, sensors and environmental data to deliver clear, simple and up-to-date public information on wildfires, extreme weather and the fragility of the territory.

The challenge

Climate change rewrote the Karst's fire regime. The old playbook no longer holds.

The catastrophic fires of summer 2022 burned for days across the Italy–Slovenia border. Karst Firewall 5.0 answers with a shared, cross-border system: ecosystem-based adaptation, satellite data, predictive AI, field sensing and simulation — built so first responders, authorities and communities on both sides work from the same picture.

01 / SEE

Map the risk

A Karst-calibrated Fire Weather Index turns Copernicus satellite data and live stations into a daily, street-level risk map.

02 / SENSE

Watch the ground

Weather stations, IoT "electronic noses" and drones feed real conditions into the twin across both countries.

03 / SIMULATE

Model the spread

The PyroWISE engine simulates how a fire would grow — informing prevention, firebreaks and intervention.

04 / SHARE

Act together

One cross-border picture for ZGS, Vigili del Fuoco, civil protection and municipalities on both sides of the Karst.

A 5.0 approach: technology beside people and nature

In the spirit of Industry 5.0 and Society 5.0, Karst Firewall does not replace the people who protect the Karst — it stands beside them, quietly amplifying the everyday work of prevention. Satellites, IoT sensors, AI and the digital twin are fused with the land and its communities, keeping human judgement and a living ecosystem at the centre: powerful where it matters, simple to use — technology and nature working as one.

Why a Karst index

Generic fire-danger maps miss the Karst. So we built one that doesn't.

97.3%

of Karst fires occur below Europe's generic "High" fire-danger threshold. A one-size-fits-all index simply doesn't see them.

77.5%

fire detection rate for the Karst Fire Weather Index — versus a 29% baseline for FWI alone, by pairing severity with an ML ignition model.

0.934

AUC of the Random Forest ignition model, using hotspot density, infrastructure distance and corrected seasonal sampling.

An EU Interreg Italy–Slovenia project

Built across the border, for the border.

Karst Firewall 5.0 is co-funded by the Interreg VI-A Italy–Slovenia Programme and led by Università IUAV di Venezia with six partners. It promotes fire-resilient forestry and ecosystem-based climate adaptation, supported by an Industry 5.0 approach.
