Karst FireWall 5.0 is a free natural-hazard monitoring tool for local communities in the cross-border Karst plateau. It brings together artificial intelligence, satellites, sensors and environmental data to provide clear, simple and up-to-date public information on wildfires, extreme weather and the fragility of the territory.
The catastrophic wildfires of summer 2022 burned for days across the Italy–Slovenia border. Karst Firewall 5.0 answers with a shared, cross-border system: ecosystem-based adaptation, satellite data, predictive AI, field sensing and simulation — designed so first responders, authorities and communities on both sides work from the same information.
A Karst-calibrated Fire Weather Index turns Copernicus satellite data and live data from weather stations into a daily, street-level risk map.
Weather stations, IoT "electronic noses" and drones feed real conditions into the twin across both countries.
The PyroWISE engine simulates how a wildfire would grow — informing prevention, firebreaks and intervention.
One cross-border picture for ZGS, Vigili del Fuoco, civil protection and municipalities on both sides of the Karst.
In the spirit of Industry 5.0 and Society 5.0, Karst Firewall does not replace the people who protect the Karst — it stands beside them, quietly amplifying the everyday work of prevention. Satellites, IoT sensors, AI and the digital twin are fused with the land and its communities, keeping human judgement and a living ecosystem at the centre: powerful where it matters, simple to use — technology and nature working as one.
of Karst wildfires occur below Europe's generic "High" wildfire-risk threshold. A one-size-fits-all index simply doesn't see them.
wildfire detection rate for the Karst Fire Weather Index — versus a 29% baseline for FWI alone, by pairing severity with a ML ignition model.
AUC of the Random Forest ignition model, using hotspot density, infrastructure distance and corrected seasonal sampling.

The Karst Firewall 5.0 project addresses two challenges in the programme area: wildfires and their governance. It aims to develop innovative action plans that preserve the health of the Karst region and maximise its resilience through a forward-looking approach, and to promote cross-border cooperation between the two countries.
